Impeller replacement

I have a mercury 135 outboard, I had to cut off the old impeller, the shaft is good and clean, I have the correct parts. When I go to put on the new impeller, it does not fit at the bottom of the shaft. Any ideas?

Serial # of the motor?---A V-6 or inline 6?

New factory parts are rarely an issue.------Perhaps use emery paper on the shaft to do the trick.
